On Friday, November 25, adults and kids of all ages are invited to the 28th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting extravaganza at Cannery Row’s Steinbeck Plaza, just a 6-minute walk from our hotel. Stroll over to the plaza between noon and 5 pm to see Cannery Row in a whole new way, with a free Red (Fire) Engine Ride around Monterey’s most famous district. From 3:30 – 5:30, carolers will perform your favorite holiday classics, and at 4 the folks from KMBY Radio will join the festivities with a hoppin’ line-up of Oldies for the Holidays. The official Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place from 5:45 – 6, followed by a visit from Ole Saint Nick from 6 – 9. Can’t make it on November 25th? That’s okay, you’re welcome to drop by Santa’s Cannery Row Workshop from noon – 3 pm any Saturday or Sunday through December 18 to take pictures with Santa and make sure he has your latest wish list on file back at the North Pole.

On Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, join thousands of celebrants at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center for this family-friendly event featuring wine tasting, local artists and artisans plying their wares, and lots of live entertainment, with performances by popular musical artists specializing in a wide array of genres, from country to reggae, disco to classic rock, 80s new wave to R&B and funk. Visit the sprawling farmers market to peruse an outstanding selection of locally cultivated organic produce, including spinach, lettuce, onions, cauliflower, peaches, plums, and, of course, artichokes. Drop by one or more of the many cooking demonstrations, where chefs will share their finest recipes for a surprisingly varied range of artichoke dishes, from sausage, to pastries, to ice cream, and so much more.

Colton Hall, built by and named for Monterey’s first mayor, became California’s grandest public building when construction ended in 1849. That same year, Colton Hall hosted the state’s first constitutional convention, and has since served as a schoolhouse, communal gathering place, police department, courthouse, and more. Drop by to admire its stately Greek Revival design, and check out the second-story museum for an introduction to Monterey’s fascinating history. The San Carlos Cathedral (aka, The Royal Presidio Chapel), constructed in 1794, is notable in California for being both the oldest stone building and the oldest parish to operate continuously since its founding (just one other cathedral in the United States, St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, has served congregants as long as San Carlos). Take a guided tour, or roam the enchanting grounds at your leisure. Finally, Carmel Mission, built in 1797 and located in nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea, is another California one-of-a-kind as the only Spanish mission with its original bell and bell tower still intact. Today, the mission serves as a parish, school, and museum.

Cannery Row has changed somewhat since Steinbeck’s time there in the 30s—the last sardine canning factory shut its doors in 1973—but the waterfront street has nevertheless maintained much of its original architecture and character, making it a particularly charming route for a stroll.

But artichoke fans? This event is just for you! July 24-25, the Artichoke Festival returns for its 62nd year at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center.

Colton Hall

Originally conceived by its namesake and the first mayor of Monterey, Walter Colton, Colton Hall has served as a public school, sheriff’s office, courthouse, and police headquarters. Carmel Mission

Located a bit outside the city, this stunning structure is well worth the short trip over to Carmel-by-the-Sea. Constructed in 1797, no other Spanish mission in the state has preserved its original bell tower and bell. Today the Carmel Mission serves not only as a parish but also as a school and museum.

While most monarchs live for just four to five weeks after reaching maturity, the special generation of monarch butterflies that migrate to Monterey County have a lifespan of up to six months. Scientists cannot yet explain how each new generation knows the way to warmer weather, but one thing is for sure—they love the golden California sunshine!

Although the butterflies can be seen in other places along the coast, including Big Sur, their favorite place to rest their wings is right here in Monterey County at the Monarch Grove Butterfly Sanctuary. Blue Whale. The largest animal not just in the sea but anywhere on earth, the blue whale visits our bay in summer and fall. This creature’s proportions are truly unbelievable: think two-ton tongues and a heart that’s about the size of a compact car. The blue whale’s total weight comes to around 150 tons—that's two-and-a-half dozen elephants.

Harbor Seal. For such a cumbersome creature on land, this little fella (well, they can grow up to six feet and 300 pounds) is shockingly quick and elegant in the water. Harbor seals have been known to plunge down as far as 1500 feet below the surface of the water and can hold their breath for 40 minutes.

Giant Pacific Octopus. The extraordinarily intelligent giant Pacific octopus is great at problem-solving and apt to use not only speed and stealth but also guile to hunt its prey. A mature giant Pacific octopus tends to weigh just over 30 pounds, with an arm span of 14 feet, though the largest ever documented, with a nearly 30-foot arm span, weighed in at a whopping 600 pounds.

Every year the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea, which was incorporated on Halloween over a century ago, throws a big, family-friendly Halloween bash to commemorate both the city’s birthday and America’s favorite day of tricks and treats. A ghoulish parade through downtown kicks off at 11 A.M., followed by a hotdog lunch that draws thousands of costumed residents and visitors at the Sunset Center. The festivities conclude later in the evening with a spooktacular dance party in the streets.

Now in its 60^th year, the Monterey Museum of Art aims to help the public appreciate the breadth and depth of great art that has been produced in California over the last two centuries. In addition, the museum's permanent collection boasts extensive holdings in Asian art, contemporary art, and photography. Highlights include pieces by such visionaries as Ansel Adams, Armin Hansen, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. The Monterey Museum of Art also offers workshops for artists of all ages and skill levels. More than two centuries ago, a group of Franciscan friars cultivated the first batch of wine grapes here in Monterey County. Today, Monterey Wine Country has blossomed into over 40,000 acres of top-tier vineyards yielding a characteristically powerful flavor that translates into some of the finest wines in the world. The relatively warm southern part of the county tends to produce grapes for Merlot, Zinfandel, and especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In the cooler north, you’ll find Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and (the most prolific of all, comprising 40% of the county’s grape yield) Chardonnay. If you’d like to sample the delicious fruits of Monterey’s wine labors yourself, you’re in luck, as there are many premium tasting rooms right here on Cannery Row, including Carmel Ridge, Bargetto Winery, Pierce Ranch Vineyards, and more.

As the fishing industry dwindled in the mid-20^th century, tourism gradually became the focus of Old Fisherman’s Wharf. If you’re an early riser, we highly recommend a drive (or perhaps even a walk) down to the wharf to watch the sun peer over the horizon to greet the fishing boats setting out on a new day. In addition to the wide variety of seafood restaurants that line the wharf, you’ll also find art galleries, jewelry stores, specialty candy shops, and other vendors selling all sorts of souvenirs. Visit Custom House Plaza, site of California’s very first government building and of the Monterey Maritime Museum. As you start to tire from your explorations, we know it might be tempting to lie down and sun yourself alongside the sea lions, but we recommend against it. Though it would be impossible to create a comprehensive list of all the marine life that calls the sanctuary home, here are a few of our favorite creatures, accompanied by some fun facts:

The sea otter. The smallest marine mammal in North America, the sea otter differs from other underwater mammals in that it doesn’t sport a thick layer of blubber for warmth. Instead, its body is covered in extraordinarily dense fur, with over one million hairs per square inch (versus about 100,000 on the average human head).

The white shark. The ocean’s largest predatory fish, the white shark has remained virtually unchanged by evolution for the last 11 million years. When you realize that the biggest threat to these fierce predators isn’t a sea creature at all, but instead, humans, you start to see why marine sanctuaries are so vital to the health of the ocean.

Harbor Seal. The playful harbor seal is as clumsy and awkward on land as it is graceful and swift in the water. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might catch one “bottling,” that is, sleeping almost submerged, with just the tip of the nose held above water for air.

Blue Whale. The majestic blue whale is the most massive animal in the sea or on the land. Blue whales can grow up to 100 feet long and can weigh up to 150 tons (roughly equivalent to 30 elephants).

Giant Pacific Octopus. On average, the giant Pacific octopus grows to about 33 pounds with an arm span of around 14 feet (the record is 600 pounds and 30 feet). These exceptionally intelligent creatures use stealth, speed, and trickery to catch mussels, clams, and crabs for their sustenance.
